The Food Bank of Corpus Christi, an independent, nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization that solicits and distributes food that might otherwise go to waste or be discarded by manufacturers, wholesalers or retailers.

Food Bank of Corpus Christi Facts

     In 2005 The Food Bank of Corpus Christi was recognized nationally with an award for its Nutrition Education Mobile Kitchen. This innovative program delivers food and nutrition education classes to rural communities. This outreach model is the first of its kind in the nation.
    The Food Bank of Corpus Christi is one of only two food banks in the State of Texas authorized by HEB to collect perishables from their local stores. In 2006 alone, 889,685 pounds of perishable products, almost 20% of our total food distributions, were perishable products.
    The Rural Delivery Program has been in existence for several years. Our refrigerated truck transports food to 55 distribution sites in 11 counties every week.
    This year, a new outreach program was implemented in partnership with the Health and Human Service Commission of Texas (HHSC) and the Texas Food Bank Network. Our Outreach Coordinator provides application assistance to qualified individuals for all HHSC programs including: Food Stamps, Adult and Children’s Medicaid, Children’s Health Care Program (CHIPS), Women’s Healthcare Program, and Long-Term Care for seniors.
    In 2007 the Food Bank opened a distribution pantry located in the Nutrition Education building. The pantry offers a “shopping model” where participants can select food of their liking as opposed to receiving a bag of pre-selected items. This model offers a more dignified approach to food distribution.
    The Food Bank serves approximately 122,100 different individuals a year.
