On Saturday, December 1, 2007, thirty-five of our students were at the Corpus Christi Catholic Charities office early in the morning, ready to assemble "food baskets" for families that depend upon the generous work and services provided by Catholic Charities. Our Centurions were so energetic and became so organized that a task that would have usually taken several hours was accomplished in much less time. The assembly line of students and other volunteers put together 150 boxes of food items. In addition to personal satisfaction that service provides, the students earned hours toward the Christian Solidarity service requirement. The activity was coordinated by Delia Carranza, JPIIHS Campus Evangelization Director.
The JPIIHS Centurions prove themselves again! After weeks of working on collecting canned food products and monetary donations, our school won first place in the small school category, collecting the most pounds of food per person. This campus project was a school community effort, with students, parents, faculty and staff involved. Our Student Council and cosponsors Debra Castro and Stephanie Fling coordinated the food drive on our campus. The annual KIII-TV 3 "Share Your Christmas" involves area schools in a food drive that benefits the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. During a televised interview at KIII-TV 3, Debra Castro (Chemistry teacher), Stephanie Fling (Math teacher), and Dania Benavides (student) were presented with the $800 First Place Prize. Congratulations and thanks to all who supported this project.
