Krill Grill Gingerbread

Grande Communications sponsored a fruit sculpting contest for the five Kids Cafés of Corpus Christi.  Participating was City Housing Authority sponsored Kids Cafes from La Armada and Navarro Housing programs, Cliff Maus Kids Café, North Side Manor Kids Café, and Garcia Arts Center Kids Café.  The event was held on February 13, 2008 at the Food Bank.  This was the first time we have ever had this type of event and the kids really had a good time.  The sculptures were rated based on Best Valentine Theme, Best Presentation and Most Creative.  The teams were each given a tub of fruit and a sheet cake and were challenged to create something with the items with a Valentine theme.  It was amazing to watch as their creative minds went to work.  Each team had a volunteer from Grande Communications to do the cutting and chopping and to help where needed but the creation was the teams.

Our thanks to Grande Communications for making this happen and thanks to the Ice Rays for helping make it a success including providing tickets to the winning team, Garcia Arts Center.  Everyone agreed that this was a great experience for the teams and look forward to doing something similar in the future.

The Kids Café program is an after school program designed to help these at risk kids with homework, tutoring, computer skills, life skills and especially nutrition education and choices along with a hot meal twice a week.  We continue to search for funding to either expand the number of kids we can serve or to increase the number of times we serve.
