The cornerstone of the new building is a "kitchen classroom," a fully equipped food preparation and demonstration area designed to help educate those who depend on donated food, as well as individuals with special dietary needs, about nutrition.   Nutrition and cooking classes will be offered at no cost.  "It's important to not only provide food to our clients, but to teach them how to prepare healthier, more nutritious meals," said Bea Hanson.  "With the rise in obesity and diabetes, especially in our youth, this valuable training will benefit our entire community."

Nutrition Education

An increasing number of people are looking to the Food Bank for food. We realize that we have an unprecedented opportunity to do more than merely distribute food. South Texas is facing acute health problems that occur disproportionately among the poor, especially the minority poor; including diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other related conditions. We sense a keen, otherwise unmet need to help individuals learn how to feed their families nutritious meals on a low budget using food from the food bank. and/or food stamps.

In cooperation with Texas A&M University, and Christus-Spohn Hospital, the Food Bank offers Nutrition Education training to individuals who receive food from the Food Bank and who live in the rural communities with no access to this type of programs. The classes have been so successful that the Diabetes Association is exploring the possibility of working together in similar programs throughout the Coastal Bend.

Fresh Produce Program

The Board of Directors of the Food Bank is committed to offer not only food, but also an opportunity for better nutrition and better health to people in need. In order to accomplish this goal, the Food Bank has been accessing fresh produce whenever possible and distributing to all 11 service counties.

Kids' Cafe

In 2008 the Food Bank of Corpus Christi operates five Kids Café programs at La Armada and Navarro City Housing complexes, Garcia Arts Center, Cliff Maus Housing, and North Side Manor Apartments.  We are serving 150 plus kids ages 8-12 during the school year.  In addition to well-balanced meals, the children attending Kids Cafes receive homework assistance, tutoring, computer, reading labs and fitness activities.  Kids' Cafe pages.
